I love the haunting closer "One for You, One for Me". It's one of my favorites from that year. I should revisit the other three you mention.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4798923425986128338.post-84029764040357410292015-03-05T01:40:22.093-08:002015-03-05T01:40:22.093-08:00And so we get to the final ten:
10. Aesthetic Perf...And so we get to the final ten:
10. Aesthetic Perfection - Not too bad screamo gimp music - 5/10
9. Ayumi Ishida - Quality stuff that brings to mind The Castle of Cagliostro (well, for me anyway) - 7/10
8. Megson - I'm a bit stuck on the fence with this one. I veer between liking it and hating it. His accent grates on me so I'll give it - 3/10
7. Kiesza - Quality - 7/10
6. Eels - Amazingly, this wasn't as painful as usual. Surely this is the beardy little fellow's pinnacle - 5/10
5. DJ Sanj - More great Bhangra stuff - 7/10
4. Cinerama - This one grew on me, a bit too gentle for my liking but even so - 6/10
3. Heidi Talbot - I'm not keen on this mixture of scrawky female singing plus old pensioner voice ('shofter shtuff' - put your teeth in fella) - 3/10
2. Rise Against - Not as much like Blink 182 as last year's entry (but there's still a whiff) this starts off pretty well, a bit over produced and glossy with some poor backing vocals, but overall not bad. The song then seemingly builds as it heads into a little instrumental bit. I waited with baited breath for it to all kick off. Then it descends into a godawful slow bit that kills any momentum. (Here's another lovely comparison for you.) It all sounds like a cross between the worst bits of Biffy Clyro and The Kings of Leon. Terrible. The final chorus never pulls it back round and adds nothing to the song. I'm only ranting so much because it was so, so close to being a good song. A real shame. (Mrs evlkeith knew that I wouldn't be too keen because she could listen to it without wincing.) - 2/10 (Could have been a 7 if not for the slow bit.)
1. Emmy the Great - As with most number ones, it's okay - 4/10

So there you have it, a pretty good evening with a total of six likes including Eels man!

This gives a Festive 50 total of 23 likes = 46%
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693477187726525715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4798923425986128338.post-4881869229764376362015-03-04T03:33:20.942-08:002015-03-04T03:33:20.942-08:00Next ten:

Teleman - Reminds me a little bit of Freezepop - 4/10
18. Sons and Daughters - I really liked some of the earlier Festive 50 entries by these little chums, but I think that they were flukes - 3/10
17. ARIA - In a completely unpredictable fashion I actually quite liked this. It's still too glossy and overproduced and her voice verges on irritating but the song shines through - 5/10
16. Fong Tran - Like the other spoken word entry, I didn't like this. American historians have distorted history to suit their own ends. Not really a revelation - 2/10
15. Morrissey - Normally a banker for a half decent song, I wasn't that bothered about this one. The instrumental malarkey at the end is okay, I suppose - 4/10
14. Swami - Phew, a turn for the better. Bhangra good - 6/10
13. The Be Good Tanyas - The good run continues with this laid back offering - 7/10
12. Ezra Furman - The love child of Dean and Edna comes good with a song that has a chorus that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rocket From the Crypt album - 5/10
11. Veronica Falls - The Lush-alikes just manage to creep into the like category with Veachy Head - 5/10

It all seemed like it was going wrong but the last four pulled it round to give a total of five likes.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693477187726525715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4798923425986128338.post-71976137911093731412015-03-04T03:20:29.517-08:002015-03-04T03:20:29.517-08:00Here we go with the next set then:
30. Saira Khan ...Here we go with the next set then:
30. Saira Khan - I've really enjoyed all of the bhangra stuff this year and this one is very pleasant - 6/10
29. SEMARGL - Seedy video but a great song especially when turned up loud - 7/10
28. Adora - In a completely predictable fashion I hated this. Most of the time singers perform without an accent. Here, her cloying Disney-esque accent makes me vomit up my spleen - 1/10
27. The Soft Pack - Standard indie stuff - 4/10
26. Marisa Medina - Just as with old films, old songs have a charm that is hard to replicate using modern tech - 5/10
25. Terry Lynn - Not very keen on this one, the verse is okay but the chorus grates - 3/10
24. Okkervil River - I can't even remember listening to this it's so standard - 2/10
23. Jenny Lewis - You can't beat a good yodel - 4/10
22. Savages - I don't like Siouxsie and the Banshees so these had no hope - 2/10
21. Lindi Ortega - Listenable but not one of my favourites - 3/10

Not the greatest ten for me then, but there were still a respectable three likes.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693477187726525715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4798923425986128338.post-45737776756258989862015-02-26T10:53:44.765-08:002015-02-26T10:53:44.765-08:00Time for the next batch:

He lost me completely when he went on about a generation who have learnt everything from Facebook and Twitter - 2/10
39. Mesh - Not too bad this one in a kind of sing-a-longy type of way - 5/10
38. Bob Marley - Reggae is one genre that I've never been able to get into, so this had no hope - 2/10
37. Gorgon City - Smooth - 6/10
36. Keaton Henson - Why is his voice so pathetic? He needs a good hiding - 1/10
35. Grendel - Standard issue, but okay - 4/10
34. Karolina Cicha & Spolka - One of my favourites of this set of ten, really like the harmonies - 6/10
33. Vic Godard & the Subway Sect - Not keen on this, it sounds too Britpoppy for my liking - 2/10
32. Rokia Traoré - Top sing-a-long tune - 6/10
31. Craig Connelly & Christina Novelli - Again, fairly standard issue stuff - 4/10

That makes an overall score of four likes. Not bad considering this isn't one of favourite sets of songs.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693477187726525715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4798923425986128338.post-86119039121889787932015-02-07T05:02:13.298-08:002015-02-07T05:02:13.298-08:00Here's my ratings of these lovely offerings th...Here's my ratings of these lovely offerings then:
50. Austra - not as bad as you make out, she definitely doesn't need to be Austra-cised - 3/10
49. Banco de Gaia - I quite like this, it sounds like the end music from The Mist - 4/10
48. CocoRosie - Again not too bad, the chorus lets it down though - 5/10
47. Deadmau5 - I'd heard some of their stuff before and not been too impressed. This seems cynically designed to appeal to teenagers with it's really cool sweariness. Apart from that, and them fluffing the bit where it all kicks back in, it's not too bad - 5/10
46. Allo Darling - Stupid accent - 2/10
45. Queens of the Stone Age - Easily one of my favourites of the evening - 6/10
44. The Geraldine Fibbers - I really liked last year's entry by these but this one left me cold - 3/10
43. Susheela Raman - The constantly evolving chorus impressed me in this one - 7/10
42. Fernhill - The slow tooting at the start is dull. The jaunting tooting in the middle for about ten seconds is great. The singing is then back to dullness again - 2/10
41. Bobby Mouldy - This sounds more like his sugary Sugar offerings, but it's okay I suppose - 5/10

So that makes a total of five likes. After much listen time these are my ratings:
10. Bright Eyes - Not a big Bright Eyes fan but this is okay I suppose - 4/10
9. The Geraldine Fibbers - Would have been my number 2 out of this selection. The woo woos at the end let it down a tad in a Brit pop style but still, it's pretty great - 8/10
8. First Aid Kit - Again not too bad, this grew on me to give it a rating of - 6/10
7. Sons and Daughters - I've liked the Sons and Daughters entries from past Festive 50s but this one didn't click with me - 5/10
6. Okkervil River - not for me this kind of thing - 3/10
5. Allo Darlin' - Hate this with a passion. Basically due to the fact that I hate the overuse of the words 'amazing' and 'awesome' for things that barely scratch the surface of average. I can't even bear to listen to it - 1/10
4. Prince of Panthers - Great first seven minutes and then it goes nowhere. The last five minutes drags it down. But bell ringing has gone up in my estimations - 6/10
3. Veronica Falls - Quite acceptable in a Lush kind of way - 6/10
2. Kacey Musgrave - For once I feel quite sorry for Caitlin Rose not being number 2. I thought her entry was loads better than this - 4/10
1. Intersys - The number 1 is spot on. I prefer the bits without singing but nevertheless it's still great. Like you say, way better than the Infecteds this year - 9/10

So for the top ten that's five likes. More than I thought there would be on first listening.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693477187726525715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4798923425986128338.post-38133755068347502522014-06-23T06:03:37.328-07:002014-06-23T06:03:37.328-07:00I quite like this for its simple standard-issue in...I quite like this for its simple standard-issue indieness. However I don't agree with these things:

1. That "Witching Hour" is an uncomplicated album. There are many layers of sounds, there are synths that sound like guitars and guitars that sound like synths, there are many sounds that I've never heard before. There are many interesting and complex production techniques. Its catchiness doesn't reflect simplicity in execution. Replace "uncomplicated" with "catchy" and you're right. This album is far more than a plain indie rock/synthpop album.

2. That Witching Hour is "unspectacular indie". Come on... Tell me another album similar to this one.
