<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">There’s always
a couple of gems on ‘sampler’ albums and this Navigator collection is no
exception. Mixed in with the standard folk fair is Bella Hardy’s slice of
seaside history which sits somewhere between sea shanty and a piece of musical
social history. It’s a moving story with a clever twist and timeless vocals.

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Okkervil River
operate in a distinct bubble of their own making where dark folk meets
passionate fiercely delivered lyrics. I doubt it will ever be popular in the
widest sense, but that doesn’t prevent their unique take on the genre being both
fascinating and intoxicating. Compared to the other Okkervil albums I’ve
listened to this is positively upbeat and jolly. Some of the tracks even have
an element of Panic at the Disco about them, but don’t get giddy, it’s only a
cursory nod to the real world.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">This is still
the Okkervil template with a harsh yet beautiful selection of songs that
partner hand crafted song writing skills with Will Sheff’s melancholy lyrics
delivered with a force of nature singing style that can sometimes shatter your
fine china. There’s plenty of dark ballads, chunky folk music and heartfelt
sentiments as we’ve come to expect, however there’s not one track that you can
say really stands out, unlike their other albums.</span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">‘Plus Ones’ is
possibly the nearest thing to an Okkervil anthem but somehow tails off in the
second half. Other highlights are the jolly ‘A Hand to Take Hold of a Scene’,
the soaring ‘Our life is Not a Movie or Maybe’ and the mammoth country yarn of
‘A Girl in Port’. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><o:p><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;">Everyone’s
favourite middle aged moaner returns with another eagerly awaited collection of
embittered crooning performances. And very good it is too, despite all the
anti-hype that generally accompanies every Morrissey release. This time the
twist to the standard template is the adding of a global element, both lyrically
and musically, with Mozza moaning on about world conflicts, bullfighting and
the generic cruelty of humanity. The Boz Boorer backing track, without ever
approaching authentic ‘world’ music, at least tips its hat at some latin
inspired flamenco style guitar on several tracks. The prospect of Morrissey
actually singing along to some serious world music exponents is almost too
mouth watering to contemplate and unfortunately it will never happen, but I can
dream.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;">On the upside
it’s a very contemporary album lyrically and our hero not only deals with
global conflict but throws in some attacks on A-Level pressures, animal cruelty, art critics, as well as his own introverted pain and loneliness. The
surprising thing is that after all these years and a staunch refusal to
reinvent himself (Bowie style), it’s still one of the best albums you could
wish for, with some sing-a-long stormers mixed in with the thoughtful melancholy
ballads. Surely he should be knocking out a CD out every year Eels style? How
difficult can it be?<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;">Just like REM
albums, it’s difficult not to like something about every track and they all have
their individual merits. The highlights however are probably the archetypal
Morrissey bellowing yodel of ‘Kiss Me A Lot’, the sixth formers anthem ‘Staircase
at the University’ and the philosophical classic that is ‘Earth is the
Loneliest Planet’. My favourite is on the excellent bonus disk, which is
incidentally well worth the extra expense, in the form of ‘Art Hounds’ which is
a bitter rant at highbrow art critics, but contains one of the best false
endings in history and a fantastic call to arms from Mozza to ‘take my hand if
you cannot stand this fake world’. It’s a work of genius.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qJVqmUNTpYB1PpWimu7TI_F_JbK9xmNGKUXiSWg8xn1g5g4iiNI8FOHOjXr1ymV1c5C2Mud99DGYtKGiK0GSN6aBf6qCF9qXJJmyHfzD4aPiRGG8NQPzUnYD6tXU9_kCe8QBHagc47M/s1600/The+be+good+Tanyas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qJVqmUNTpYB1PpWimu7TI_F_JbK9xmNGKUXiSWg8xn1g5g4iiNI8FOHOjXr1ymV1c5C2Mud99DGYtKGiK0GSN6aBf6qCF9qXJJmyHfzD4aPiRGG8NQPzUnYD6tXU9_kCe8QBHagc47M/s400/The+be+good+Tanyas.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">There was a
place in the seminal comic 2000AD’s Judge Dredd story called the Cursed Earth.
It was a radiation ravaged desert outside the walls of Mega City One
exclusively inhabited by mutant hillbillies, mutant spiders and all kinds of
other mutants. I seriously doubt the Be Good Tanyas hail from the Cursed Earth
in reality, but in a musical sense they are fully fledged passport holding
citizens.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">What they’ve
done is written the perfect sound track for life in the post apocalyptic
radioactive wasteland. It’s off kilter Americana with a sour mashed flavour
that takes the deep south template favoured by Caroline Herring and mutates it
into a banjo fuelled, skiffle infused hybrid that is as disturbing as it is
beautiful. When Judge Dredd stumbles on a group of mutated hobos clustered
around an oil drum fire, this is what they were listening to.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">In reality they
come from Canada which is less romantic but probably better for them. Every
track is a little country meets bluegrass gem and to name but a few; ‘Scattered
Leaves’ is a lilting leftfield ballad, ‘Draft Daughters Blues’ is wholesome and
chunky blues and ‘The Littlest Birds’ defies you not to sing along. My personal
favourite is the stark, banjo meets that unique vocal style of ‘Only in the
Past’ and then the fiddle kicks in. Having said that, the entire collection is
not too shabby.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Unusual,
original and glorious, the Be Good Tanyas are a folk band I’ll be keeping an eye
on in the years to come. A rich and varied collection just as at home in the
North of England or in a post nuclear irradiated fictional desert. They also
have the despairing look of a group that may also give us an interview?</span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I never liked anything else they did before or after this blissful indie/dance crossover single. It seems a travesty of justice that the excellent Moira Lambert got the push in favour of Sarah Cracknell, but at least she didn't outstay her welcome; I wonder what she's up to now? Check out the typically early 90's video; the combination of football table and this song never fails to send me into a frenzy.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I bought this
album on the strength of the track that was included on the Rough Trade Counter
Culture album that sounded like The Joyce Mckinney experience, a group that Evlkeith has
championed valiantly over the years. However let's not make any bones about it,
Savages wear their influences on their sleeves and the predominant influence
is not Joyce. Essentially this sounds like a Siouxsie and the Banshees tribute
band! And as such I wasn’t that sure I was even going to give it any air time
on the car stereo.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">But wonders
will never cease; a couple of listens and I was hooked. You soon forget about
the Siouxsie-ness that pervades everything and start to realise this is a
quality collection of harsh, post punk ditties which take the sound forward
rather than revel in the early eighties. I think it probably helps if
you actively like the Banshees' back catalogue though.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">The drumming is
so beautifully harsh at times it takes your breath away and those tribal rhythms permeate
every song to enhance the minimal distorted guitar and the howling familiar
vocals. The pick of the bunch are the pummelling, relentless opener ‘Shut Up’,
‘No Face’ which sounds like X-Ray Spex at their ragged live best, and my
favourite is the epic ‘She Will’ which showcases those pounding drums and Hooky
style base to their maximum. Throw in the most saccharin of vocals and some
soaring guitar riffs and you’re onto a serious winner.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">A Christmas
present but in this case not one I was particularly looking forward to experiencing.
Dave Grohl’s involvement with QOTSA has put me off them a bit, although my
prejudice may have no basis as I’m not sure he has anything to do with them
these days. Anyway, Grohl aside, the album is still chugging, predictable and
frankly boring. Basically, most of the tracks get flicked with the exception of
two that are at least acceptable.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">It sounds like
they’ve run out of ideas and are making records just for the paycheque now.
Having said that ‘I sat by the Ocean’ is engaging enough in a middle of the
road style and ‘The Vampire of Time and Money’ is a quirky little rock ballad
that it’s difficult not to enjoy. Credit where credit’s due, but it’s hardly
worth the price of the album on its own. All the rest have the feel of a standard
issue QOTSA b-sides and fillers compilation.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">If you ever
fancy some sample driven techno with an element of aggrotech<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and a nod to Infected Mushroom then look no
further than Holland’s leading exponents of industrial electronic action;
Grendel. I’d already heard the excellent ‘Harsh Generation’ and enjoyed the
tracks with the more up front sampling most. Sadly ‘Timewave Zero’ uses the
samples more as embellishments and relies on gravel tonsiled vocals and
pulsating rhythms for the entertainment factor.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">That’s no bad
thing, but the album definitely lurches towards a darker feel to proceedings not
unlike a pumped up version of Aesthetic Perfection but not quite so seedy. It’s
a pounding tour de force with just enough melody, hooks and singalongability to
keep you interested, but not enough to sweeten the sour atmosphere.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I enjoyed all
the tracks but worthy of special attention are the high octane rush of ‘Neon
City Lights’ (which sounds not unlike X-Cabs, which is praise indeed), the
shouty meets mellow vocal of ‘Chemicals + Circuitry’ and the eighties throwback
charms of ‘Wheels in Motion’. Best of all<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>is the mid-tempo electro of ‘Deep Waters’ with its starkly contrasted
lush arrangement and squeaky yet gorgeous vocal.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

overdosed on this kind of Balkan gypsy vibe a couple of years ago and I
struggled to engage with Mahala’s 2004 self titled album. Having said that it’s
clearly a fantastic album with the requisite tooting and fiddling action and
the booty-shakability to get everyone from old age pensioners to professional
belly dancers strutting their stuff.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Another year
and another Bright Eyes album is crossed off the list. It’s not an easy listen,
but that’s not because of any lack of quality in the songs, rather the annoying
pseudo religious diatribe that occasionally fills the space up between the
tracks. It’s not that entertaining on first listen and after a few times it
starts to drive you mad. Unfortunately the first weird rant is ‘joined’ to the
first track so it can’t be flicked and you spend to whole dirge ridden 5
minutes cursing Connor for putting you through this repeated torture. If track
one was rubbish I would have flicked the whole thing, but unfortunately it’s
rather jolly. Ok rant over, and onto the songs…<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">This sits
somewhere between the less commercial sound of Digital Ashes and the folky
lyricism of Cassadaga, and for the most part it’s the standard issue Bright
Eyes that we all know and love. It’s not until the last few songs that the
album kicks into overdrive however. The last four tracks are sublime lyrically,
beautifully crafted and up there with his best work.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">‘Triple Spiral’
kicks off the quartet with straightforward rock and tender sentiments,
‘Beginner’s Mind’ is stunning, profound and so catchy it refuses to be flushed
out of you self conscious and ‘One for You, One for Me’ completes the set with
passion, simplicity and lyrics from a genius. Oddly, the stark piano driven
dialogue of ‘Ladder Song’ is the album's most memorable moment; it’s touching,
poignant and delicate. It’s the musical equivalent being 1-nil up and scoring
four goals in the last ten minutes of a football match.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">I’m not sure
why I own this album but logically I should really like the quirky work of the
French based Casady sisters whose sound has been labelled as ‘freak folk’.
Sounds intriguing…it’s apparently a combination of blues, opera, trip hop, pop,
electronica and rap. And they almost pull it off, however for some reason it
doesn’t quite work.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYgwcElvjcc9Gw1RVsTfjb-yYijsZpu4s9eQ_3tKDSOZ5eYCQvQCh5upB13ZxjqdEMijUrV-gLfAbbSrdvuEFsX5LBxmsyNDN-ZIgWSF0yAu9WSGRICdU3YVhdMVIw38arfD3JpoX7uB0/s1600/Cocorosie4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYgwcElvjcc9Gw1RVsTfjb-yYijsZpu4s9eQ_3tKDSOZ5eYCQvQCh5upB13ZxjqdEMijUrV-gLfAbbSrdvuEFsX5LBxmsyNDN-ZIgWSF0yAu9WSGRICdU3YVhdMVIw38arfD3JpoX7uB0/s1600/Cocorosie4.jpg" height="353" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Most probably
this is because the singing sounds uncannily like the princess of quirkiness
herself, Bjork, and I struggled to get over this whenever I listened to the album.
The accent, the intonation and even the lyrical content are just too
Bjork-esque. Secondly, the whole concept is just too fussy. There’s so much
going on behind the familiar quirksome vocals. I was never sure what I was
supposed to be enjoying and when. The CD packaging is lovely though.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">All the tracks
are much of a muchness in a Bjork meets Trip Hop in the style of Of Monsters
and Men kind of way. I quite enjoyed the more straightforward songs like ‘Child
Bride’ and ‘Villain’ but the strange rapping style on ‘End of Time’ is perhaps
their finest moment. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

altogether un-enjoyable but it just didn’t push my buttons. If you like the
sound of a folky version of the Sugarcubes playing trip hop (without Einar
unfortunately) then this could well be the perfect album for you.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><span style="font-size: large;">Another
Christmas present and I’m less than convinced by the Mobile Disco experience.
It sits somewhere between minimal techno and something more commercial. It’s
not really funky techno but neither is it tech house, but I guess that’s as near
as you’ll get description wise. Maybe I’m being harsh but it all sounded like
the techno equivalent of lift music. Where’s the soul, the passion the energy? <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><span style="font-size: large;">Sadly, I’m
sure DJ’s love this kind of stuff. It’s definitely not cheesy in anyway, shape
or form, but a touch of even some rancid yoghurt would have livened things up
let alone some fully fledged cheese. It’s polished, inoffensive electronic
noodle doodling and the kind of music, I perhaps misguidedly believe, I could
make myself if I bought some expensive equipment and an Apple Mac. Which is unlikely on both counts.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><span style="font-size: large;">I realise I’m
underselling this album, but I honestly can’t think of a time when playing this
music would be in anyway pleasurable. Maybe in the greenhouse for tomatoes to
grow to? Perhaps for new age pensioners to meditate to? I doubt it would even
be any good for driving around London to in the rain, at night with all your
guys in the backseat. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
