Doccortex's Festive Fifty 2014 (20-11)

20. Bright Eyes - Ladder Song

Profound little acoustic ditty from the slightly disappointing album 'The People's Key'.

19. Teleman - Skeleton Dance

Straightforward indie action from the London based 3 piece.

18. Sons and Daughters - Rose Red

The one bright spot from the suspect album Mirror Mirror.

17.  ARIA - Your Underling

Confident pop music from the mysterious band from Buffalo.

16. Fong Tran -  Problem with what's taught in school

Blistering spoken word that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.

15. Morrissey - Staircase at the University

Sublime highlight from the excellent 'World Peace...' LP.

14. Swami - Challa II

Outstanding Bhangra fusion from the Beginners Guide compilation.

13. The Be Good Tanyas Only in the Past

Classic bluegrass from the Cursed Earth from the lovely Tanyas.

12. Ezra Furman Walk on in Darkness

The talented member of the Furman clan with my favourite from the classic 'Day of the Dog' LP.

11. Veronica Falls - Beachy Head

Glorious indie harmonies from the current best band in the world.

  1. Next ten:
    20. Bright Eyes - Amazingly I didn't mind this one, it's the first one by Bright Eyes that I've actually found listenable - 4/10
    19. Teleman - Reminds me a little bit of Freezepop - 4/10
    18. Sons and Daughters - I really liked some of the earlier Festive 50 entries by these little chums, but I think that they were flukes - 3/10
    17. ARIA - In a completely unpredictable fashion I actually quite liked this. It's still too glossy and overproduced and her voice verges on irritating but the song shines through - 5/10
    16. Fong Tran - Like the other spoken word entry, I didn't like this. American historians have distorted history to suit their own ends. Not really a revelation - 2/10
    15. Morrissey - Normally a banker for a half decent song, I wasn't that bothered about this one. The instrumental malarkey at the end is okay, I suppose - 4/10
    14. Swami - Phew, a turn for the better. Bhangra good - 6/10
    13. The Be Good Tanyas - The good run continues with this laid back offering - 7/10
    12. Ezra Furman - The love child of Dean and Edna comes good with a song that has a chorus that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rocket From the Crypt album - 5/10
    11. Veronica Falls - The Lush-alikes just manage to creep into the like category with Veachy Head - 5/10

It all seemed like it was going wrong but the last four pulled it round to give a total of five likes.
